How to Use This Calculator
1
Measure Garden Bed Area
Measure the length and width of each planting bed in feet. For curved beds, estimate the average length and width, or break into smaller rectangular sections.
2
Determine Desired Depth
Decide on mulch depth (typically 2-4 inches). New beds: use 3-4 inches. Refreshing existing mulch: add 1-2 inches to maintain proper depth.
3
Calculate Cubic Yards
Enter area dimensions and depth. The calculator shows cubic yards needed. One cubic yard covers approximately 324 square feet at 1 inch depth, 108 sq ft at 3 inches.
4
Purchase and Apply
Order mulch in bulk (cubic yards) or calculate bags needed (typically 2 cubic feet per bag). Spread evenly, keeping mulch 2-3 inches away from plant stems and tree trunks to prevent rot.
